A movie is coming out next month called "The Golden Compass." The movie is the first of a trilogy based on three books that the author calls, "His Dark Materials."
The point of this fantasy story is to show that God needs to be killed, because he isn't real anyway. My suggestion is that you don't go see the movie IF you are the kind of person, like me, who would rather not help to perpetuate those who have such designs to convince children that God is to be destroyed.
What is most insidious about the stories from Philip Pullman is that they are targeting children in our schools as well as in the marketplace. Scholastic, the world largest seller of children's books, has created quite a marketing campaign in our public schools to go along with these books. It is the perfect set up. If the Christians object to having these books in the schools, the atheists will say, "Look at those Christians, and their book banning again! They are evil." And so the books go forward and kids read them and study them and learn that all organized religion is silly and God must be killed.
Now, that said, I do not feel at all threatened by this. God cannot be weakened by anyone's books. And, God will rescue His own from such foolishness. Nevertheless, it is a pleasure to add my own voice to those who say that such drivel should be avoided, for it should.

Only thing I saw of interest is a talking bear - I always daydreamed of having a pet Grizzly.
Since the bible says that ,,, "anyone who causes a child to stumble is in trouble. it would be better for him if a millstone was tied around his neck and he was thrown into the deep ocean - than to cause a child to stumble." or in today's terms, "pullman is toast". i'd hate to be him on judgement day when he looks into the eyes of God and proclaims, "Jesus is Lord".
Bill Donahue has written a small booklet exposing this horrendous attempt to lure children into atheism. This is something that Christians of all stripes can work and pray against. God bless.
Is the argument here that atheists shouldn't write children's books? Where was the outrage twelve years ago when this "Children's Book" was first published?!?!
While I agree Mike that if you disagree with something you probably shouldn't go and see it. But this "Catholic League" press campaign is using words like "luring small children into atheism" is both silly and at the very worst Bill Donahue's attempt at making a Mountain into a mole hill.
Does this book have the ability to make someone an atheist? No more than the Chronicles of Narnia will turn a child into a Christian. Besides author Phillip Pullman isn't hiding the fact that his work is a direct response to the Christian themes in Narnia, he doesn't hide the fact that he's an atheist. I don't want to defend him but I also see the smear campaign being less about saving children and more about giving Bill Donahue a few newspaper headlines.
Dave,
I have to admit, I didn't know about the Donahue connection, and don't really care much, either. Jumper seems like a nice guy, but he made the mistake of going back to the authority of popes instead of strictly scripture.
IN fact, I think our view of Pullman should be very charitable, indeed. He has the right to use children's literature for his drivel just as Lewis did for his ideas.
However, and this is my concern, let's make sure the children and parents know what they are getting into. One must look behind the movie poster to know what is being peddled within the story. God is NOT happy with Pullman's intentions, we can be sure of that. I am not his judge, so I will not judge him. But I will warn the Christians that there is more to this movie than meets the eyes.
As to why not outrage when the books were published, well, as for myself, I never heard of these books. the first time I intersected them was when I saw a preview for this movie. Beyond that, I'm not really outraged. I'm not surprised at all. This is what unbelievers do --that's why we call them unbelievers.
Rock on.

Christianity Today has an interesting Commentary on the Golden Compass!
Hi Pastor Mike,
This is off-topic for this particular posting. I came across this story and it mentions your buddy Paula White. I didn't want to post it on that link from mid- October because I didn't think you'd see it.
Like I said back then, people like her ultimately self-destruct and it seems they are about to get thiers.
Enjoy

yeah, that article hits on an important point: the people who misbehave and abuse the system, like these wacko's in question, could be the catalyst for unwelcome government intervention into all religious institutions.
But, we rely on God. the church has been plagued from false teachers within and persecutors from without from the very beginning.
I hadn't thought of the angle of government interjecting itself into religion as a whole. I re-read the article and I totally missed that (d'oh!). That was kinda the whole point and I can't believe I missed it! For the record once again, less government would be better. Senator Grassley from Iowa should know that. I hope he navigates this cautiously and remains focused on the wackos that should be targeted.
Hey, if you thought that this movie got your attention, look at this website that I heard about on the Fred Honesburger show on kdka 1020am...this will totally blow your mind!
