Entertained into Oblivian?

Let's see. The Russians are poisoning freedom loving people; The Iranians are trying to ruin Iraq, nuke Israel, and usher in the mythical 12th Imam through chaos; the Chinese are building up an arsenal of weapons never before seen on the earth to go with their army of 2.5 million, as they oppress their 100 million Christians, prop up the evil North Korean Dictator, and hope to take over Taiwan, potentially causing war with America; North Korea is starving it's population while their leader and his Don King hair-do claims to be a deity, and he has atomic bombs to boot; the muslim nations of the middle east want to kill all the Jews, and the Christians in their midst; Africa is a continent of nations in turmoil complete with darfur genocide, Muslims slaugther, burning, raping and enslaving of Christians, etc; and, I could go on, but looking to America we are killing over a million babies a year in the womb and outlawing God whereever we find him. . . .

And what is the American public doing? Entertaining ourselves to death. We don't have time for big problems because dancing with the stars will be on soon! Then there is Madden 2006, the latest news on Brittany Spears, Desparate Housewives, Lost, and American Idol.

Of course, there is stuff to buy. Cars and toys and all we can find.

There is a story in the Bible about a King of Babylon who is partying with his comrades while his city is under siege by the Medo-persians. Of course, ignoring the world's problems while hanging out at a drinking party led to his swift downfall. We might be next.

Hmmm, I agree with you mostly. I think we, as a society, are so spoiled and selfish we think we should get what we want when we want and if we don't, we turn into adults having a hissy fit. I remember when my parents actually knew what was going on in politics and America and it was discussed in our house. Now I bet more discussions around the dinner table (if the families even gather there)are focused on just as you said--Britney, Lost, etc. I think America is indeed supersaturated with entertainment and cars, gadgets, etc. it is up to us parents to be an example and to turn off the TV and say no to every new gadget and toy on the market and set limits or our kids are going to grow up being adults that cannot even have quiet time with God Himself because they feel they need to be entertained 24/7.

Yes, you make some great points. supersaturated is a good term.

I think teaching our kids to enjoy things and life is good. HOwever, what is not good is when enjoyment of life blinds one to the realities of a suffering world. Both are needed or we'll be either too serious on the one hand, leading to despair, or too frivilous on the other hand. The great thing about being a Christian is the biblical teaching that joy comes in the midst of a fallen world.

perhaps the worst thing is the false sense of security that wealth brings.
