Imus Got Canned (and I don't care)

Don Imus said something rude on the radio, his employers didn't like it, so they fired him. That's the whole story. Nothing more.

I can't figure out why there is so much buzz about this. I used to live very close to NYC and Don Imus is local and on the radio every morning. He's rude every morning, insulting every morning. He's definitely been insulting to many political figures I admire, that's for sure. So now, he got some attention for what he said and he got fired. Fine. End of story.

I don't care if CBS is motivated by morals or money, they are free to fire their employees if they want to. It's done. Let's move on.

Well, it took a while, but we agree completely.

100%.

If you do it on company time, and your boss doesnt like it, you get fired.

Happens in the real world all of the time.

In this case, your boss felt the negative publicity you generated outdid the ratings and money you brought in.

So you are fired.

I am going to be honest and say I definitely don't know who this person is ...BUT I think you're right that if he insults people and things and brings negative attention to where he works he should be fired.

Except Insulting people is what he's being paid to do, generating publicity and being outrageous is why CBS hired IMUS. It's why they hired Howard Stern, and why they Hired, fired, and rehired Opie and Anthony and for 30+ years that's what IMUS did. All of a sudden he says three words and the show is over? Who cares, Right!!

Except it effects me, it effects radio, and it will effect Christian's on the radio. Right now there are people inside the FCC who are debating the fairness doctrine, which demands equal time for both viewpoints. If these measures go through, it will effect every voice on the radio.

Gone will be a time when Christian radio can speak out against Abortion, Homosexuality, and a myraid of other issues. If you discuss Conservative Politcs you'll have to let the other side debate. If they do they will have to offer time to the other side, the Government will force it. If you speak out against Muslims or Morman's you'll need to provide a forum for them to disagree.

Hmmm... put's it in perspective doesn't it.

Passifist, you raise very real issues. I too would object to the FCC driving Imus out or the passing of restrictions on Radio beyond what we have now. I also acknowledge that there are people who want to do this, and will even use this issue to further that agenda, if they can.

However, this is a case were employers fired an employee because they didn't want to take the heat.

This is a freedom issue. They are free to do this. Furthermore, it is not unheard of in the radio industry for people to get canned suddenly. Remember Bob Grant on WABC?

there is something out there called "the fairness doctrine" that gets carted out every once in a while in hopes of shutting down the Rush Limbaughs of the world. This is wrong, for it is the government trying to shut down political speech that it doesn't like. I oppose such things, too.

But this is the free market. The people who buy products and sell products put fear into the hearts of people who sell air time, and so they changed their programming.

What if, for example, on star99.1, someone began teaching things that were contrary to the bible, but the people didn't seem to care, but Zeraphath fired them anyway. That is legal, right?

this isn't the government.

I compare this to radio stations not playing the dixie chicks. It's not censorship. The government didn't make them do it. They have listeners whom they don't want to anger, so they stopped playing the band that makes them angry. there's nothing wrong with that either.

I agree with your second paragraph. It doesn't make sense that it's making such big headlines. That's who he is and what he does.

I don't like his cowboy hat. He wore that big hat all the time when he was on the air. What's up with that. No cattle in sight!

Get that hat off your head! You work on the radio and TV! You're not a rock star! You're not a cowboy!

Do you have guns? No.
Do you have a lasso? No.
Are you on a wanted poster? No.
Do you wear spurs? NO!

So take off the hat.

And what's with that huge belt buckle?

Who are you, Hercules?
John Wayne?

Is that supposed to protect you in a gunfight? Or is that a utility belt? Or perhaps it's a reflector to singal for help if you get lost in the jungle?
