Interesting Read On Imus and Politics

Here is a fascinating take on the possible political machinations behind Imus' firing.

I absolutely positively do not agree with most of what Don Imus has to say. I think that what he called the Rutgers girls is disgraceful. However, we live in America where Freedom of Speech is supposed to be protected. Agree or disagree, Don Imus should not have been fired. I think the people of this country should be outraged by this move. Instead it is just sad outcome of political correctness gone mad.

His speech is protected. Now he can stand out on the street corner and say it.

CBS and NBC have not violated his rights by firing him. they exercised theirs.

Anyway, your husband is right: did you see that hat? He's not a cowboy!

I'm going to be the lone wolf here, and despite the controversies surrounding it, the Imus Ranch seems to be a positive thing... Kinda makes Don a cowboy, doesn't it?

okay, he has a ranch. I'll give him that. but does it have real cows?

Nancy

Imus faced no legal punishment for this actions.

Free Speech doesn't mean you can't be held accountable for what you say.

If, while at work, I called an African American woman a "nappy haired ho", I would be literally fired on the spot.

Free Speech means you can express yourself freely, it doesnt mean their aren't some consequences.

Now, if some high and mighty prosecutor decided to charge him with a crime... well then I would say you are right.

Copied from Wikipedia:

"The charity’s goal is to provide children with an experience of living life on a functioning cattle ranch. For 10 days, each child is expected to perform chores and tasks as if they were a cowboy, such as caring for all the needs of a horse. This is intended to provide each child with an opportunity to gain self-confidence and build self-esteem. The ranch operates all year but hosts children only when school is not in session.

During the summer months, Imus would broadcast his nationally syndicated radio program, Imus in the Morning, from a studio at the Ranch. Occasionally, children attending the Ranch would appear on the program. It was also telecast on MSNBC until April 11, 2007. On April 12, 2007, the program was canceled by CBS Radio."

So yes, I guess you could say he does have cows ;)

I concede Mr. Wizard... you are correct.

I believe my mother has this whole thing wrapped up in a nutshell... He's old and they (the people at CBS) are just plain tired of him. They want fresh young blood and so The "I-Man" is out. This comment was far from the worst he ever made and this was an easy out for them.
They hired him way back when for his schtick... now all of a sudden they take offense... come on.

All of the "shock jocks" and talkers out there better watch out though... The rules of the game seem to change very rapidly in this society. What may be ignored one day will get you fired the next.
