Guess what? Malaria is back! With a vengeance. Malaria is killing men women and children in new and record numbers in the Southern Hemisphere, especially South America.
Malaria had been in the decline, of course. But that's when DDT was discovered and used. Then, the Eco-terrorists (not people who love the earth and conserve it and care for it --that's most of us, but the wacko's on the eco-left) scared the politicians of the world and banned DDT. What has happened? Malaria is back. And kids are dying.
Kids are dying? But who cares about kids dying, right? We are saving the earth. Sure we are.
"Look, we have bigger fish to fry. Did you know that George Bush is killing terrorists in Iraq? We have to stop that. He's the devil, you know."
But kids are dying because we won't poison their bugs effectively. . . .when will the madness stop?
For extensive data, click here, to read the study from the center for disease control. You might think, "Well, it will be on the news. They'll tell us about this crisis and we'll fix it." Don't bet on it. George, the devil, Bush and his wife went to a summit on the subject recently in order to bring attention to the problem. What? You didn't hear about it?
Well, did you hear that George Bush is the devil?

I haven't heard/read much about the DDT situation - malaria is a problem and in these countries it is the person with $ that has a voice. How is that right? It is also disturbing that in these 3rd world countries, children are dying because 1. they are drinking contaminated water, 2. their parents can't afford the basic childhood immunizations (chickenpox, hep.,etc)...while here "modern" parents resist the immunizations (due to possible side effects?)...I know this is different, but is it?...
Annette, I know you have seen third world politics and poverty first hand, and I think you raise a great issue.
If clean water and immunization can be such a big help to so many, let's focus on these very simple solutions to people's problems.
It is always the very poor who are most powerless. I'm not sure we in America have an understanding of the experience of being "very poor." Our poorest can get free lawyers! They may or may not be good lawyers, but it is legal help none-the-less.
To be truly poor and truly powerless politically and legally is something Americans don't see and don't even know we don't see.
