Know When To Fold Them

Bernie Williams has played for the Yankees since 1991. 1991! That's 16 seasons. In that time, he has three world series rings.

The Yankees are offering him a minor league contract for 1997. Minor leagues! What an insult. Why are they doing that? Why not go behind the scenes and say, "Bernie, time to hang up the spikes. Step down now and we'll help you in what ever direction you want to go in the future."

And Bernie, what are you doing? Retire, man. You have had a great run, but center field is for younger men, and you're not hitting well enough to DH. You have to know when to quit and enjoy the spoils of a great career in a great sport that has made you a millionaire at a relatively young age.

Nothing better than finishing well. So do it already.

Wow. Have you nothing better to do all day than blog? It's nice your church allows you to do this personal stuff on their time. Just yesterday you posted at 3:27, 4:55, 6:19, 8:58, 9:06, 9:27, 9:31, 11:51. Wouldn't it be neat if you invested some of that time into your family? Look at the other times you've posted....you're supposed to be at work doing church business. What would your congregation think if they knew you sat at your computer half the day blogging while they paid you? Maybe you need more responsibilities. I know you won't post this and that's ok, but maybe you need to say some "I'm sorrys" to your congregation for using their tithes (that they trust you and the elders with) foolishly. Some people do all they can to tithe and to see you getting paid to blog? Using their tithe money to blog is shameful. I really believe your blogging should be done at home on your own time. I'm not saying this out of malice but please think about it. Hopefully some realizations can come from it and repentence.

A, for someone afraid to identify himself, you sure have a lot of opinions.

But, your criticism allows me to say things I want to say anyway, so I will post it.

It takes me just a minute or so for most blogs. I type fast and I'm smart like that. I'm often at my comptuer. It's a modern age and much of what I do involves email, word processor stuff, etc. even all my Bible study things are on line.

Furthermore, if you look at those post times, how many of them were after work? Let's see. I went it around 9 in the morning. I got done aroun 8:45 pm (and how long was your day, A? did you have time for Oprah?), and you rightly niticed that there are three whole posts before that. So, in my 12 hour working day, that would give me, let's say, 10 minutes of posting blogs. I don't take any scheduled breaks, but let's ignore that. What if I just subtract the ten minutes from the 3.75 hours I put in over a normal 8 hour day. Okay, should the church pay me for that extra 3 + hours yesterday?

Tell you what. why don't you send me a check for whatever you make in 3.5 hours, then we'll be even.

Of course, when I got home, I had more work. As a pastor, I'm 24/7. so, time on the phone with someone who had something he "just needed me for a few minutes to talk about" took another half hour. Add that to what you are sending me.

my point? A, you have no idea what you are talking about. You show this when I post your words. I might spare you next time.

let me add another thing, I believe some, not all, of what goes on in this blog is a ministry. Like what I am doing now. I should be driving to the church, but as I stopped to check my mail, I saw your anonymous, ignorant-of-facts criticism, and thought I'd take a moment to answer.

last thing: I love my job. Compensation is not an issue for me. Harvest treats me fairly and my family is provided for. I don't mind giving out 24/7.

A, I hope you find a job where you can give your all one day, instead of sitting around calculating the hours of my day from a distance. Surely you have something better to do? How about this? Instead of throwing stones, how about you pick up your Bible and go visit a friend and share some love?

Mike, please post this. (I realize that your probably don't want a ton of people piling on "A". But as you friend for almost 25 years. I cannot hold down my keyboard.

"A..". I have known Pastor Mike for a long time. Over the years, I have also worked very closely with many different pastors. I am not sure what your experience has been, but almost all pastors that I know who loves the Lord the way Pastor Mike does, are among the hardest "working" people I know. I put "working" in quotes, because as Pastor Mike explained, his "work" is his calling, his passion. You may be an 8 to 5 clock watcher, that may be the kind of culture that you grew up in, but for the man of God who has been called and annointed for service, there is no such thing as a time clock. I wish you could be a fly on the wall in his life for just a week. I wish that you could see all of the lives this man has touched, and all of the relationships that have been infused and impacted for Christ and His kingdom because of his obedience.

You know there are many people who view pastors as "flighty" and "pious" social misfits, who know how to smile, shake hands, speak in public, and visit people in the hospital, and say good words about bad people at their funerals. Well that is not Pastor Mike, and this blog is a clear demonstration of that. I have heard a restaraunt worker in Kittanning, talk about Pastor Mike. She said that she just started going to church again at Harvest, and she brings her boyfriend and family members to hear Pastor Mike, because, "he's not what you might expect in a pastor."

He is real, he is down to earth. He is funny, He has a very discerning way of looking at the world and I think that those who read his blog will not only get a good taste of that, but they will also LEARN to be discerning for themselves.

In fact, I have referred many a people to this blog, for a good example of what can be redeeming about the internet. Just the other day, as "homework." I told my two oldest children to subscribe to Pastor Mike's blog updates via email.

Did you read his post on President Bush? Where else do you find that on the internet? Who else is teaching you to think? "A.." I don't judge you, but you missed the boat on this one. Your criticism of Pastor Mike is completely unfounded.

You should be a man (or woman) and come clean. You should reveal your identity to Pastor Mike, and you should apologize. And you know what you will find? Grace, mercy, and forgiveness.

(Now that we all wasted time and stole from our employers [except for you Pastor Mike] let's get back to work, and not be ashamed of what we're reading in Pastor MIke's blog, but be proud.)

P.S. "A.." if you would like to carry on this discussion off-line, I would be happy to, please email me at: mrpapisir@msn.com . My name is Ron Nargi.

Mr Papisir,

man, thanks for the love!

you're right, we don't have to pile on A too much, but it was kind of you nevertheless. I'll remember your words long after this blog falls onto the ash-heap of history.

And annette, that's one hour a week, not one day!

So, about Bernie Williams. Who thinks he should retire?

hey dude why is it that women always get more profile hits than men? how do you get more hits to your profile?

Okay, Back to Bernie,

He's a great player and he has been relatively free from injury. He's not ready to quit and he doesn't want to play for any other team. He had a backup role last year and played very well. He accepted this role for the team's sake. If he accepts the minor league contract and somebody gets hurt, then he is the perfect guy to bring on the scene. He also adds a lot to the clubhouse. He's a leader and he's well respected. He also knows how to come up with the big hit in the big game. Something you cannot teach to younger players. I say, if you can find a way to keep Bernie involved with the Yankees, that's a good thing. Does a player/coach take up a roster spot?

Ok I'll weigh in on Bernie. Go out Jerome Bettis style on top and a world champ! Ok, not everybody can play for the most storied frachise in all professional sports, but even going out like Tiki Barber has done this year is better than overstaying your welcome ala Jerry Rice. Sorry I had to use football analogies, baseball is a great sport but it's tough when your a Buc's fan.
